Typing in Tamil used to be a technical ordeal requiring specialized software downloads and proprietary font installations. Today, every major operating system supports Tamil natively right out of the box.
Whether you want to hunt-and-peck on the traditional Tamil99 layout or breeze through using English-to-Tamil phonetic transliteration (Tanglish), this guide covers everything.
Typing Tamil on Windows 11 and Windows 10
Microsoft has deeply integrated Indian languages into Windows. You no longer need third-party apps like 'Azhagi' to type Tamil on your laptop.
- Open the Start Menu and click the Settings gear icon.
- Navigate to Time & Language on the left sidebar.
- Click on Language & region.
- Under "Preferred languages", click Add a language.
- Search for "Tamil", select Tamil (India), and click Next to install the package.
- Once installed, click the three dots (...) next to Tamil and select Language options.
- Under Keyboards, click Add a keyboard. Here you must choose your style:
- Tamil Phonetic: Best for 99% of people. Type "amma" to get "அம்மா".
- Tamil99: The standard strict Tamil layout approved by the TN Gov.
Shortcut: Press Windows Key + Spacebar simultaneously to rapidly switch between English and Tamil anytime you are typing.
Typing Tamil on macOS (MacBooks & iMacs)
Apple devices natively support Tamil phonetic transliteration out of the box. It is incredibly snappy and accurate.
- Click the Apple logo in the top left and select System Settings.
- Scroll down the sidebar and select Keyboard.
- Find the "Text Input" section and click the Edit... button next to Input Sources.
- Click the + (Plus) icon in the bottom-left corner of the window.
- Search for "Tamil" and select Tamil - Anjal (This is Apple's name for phonetic transliteration layout).
- Click Add. You will now see a language flag icon in your top right menu bar.
Shortcut: Assuming default settings, press Ctrl + Space (or the dedicated globe key on newer MacBooks) to swap input languages instantly.
Typing Tamil on iPhone and iPad (iOS)
The native Apple keyboard is all you need for iOS.
- Open the Settings app.
- Go to General > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard...
- Scroll down or search to find Tamil.
- A screen will ask you to select layout styles. Choose Transliteration. (You can also choose standard Tamil if you wish to draw the letters manually).
- When typing a message, press and hold the 🌐 Globe icon in the bottom left of your keyboard to switch to Tamil Transliteration.
Typing Tamil on Android Devices
If you are on Android, you must use Gboard (Google Keyboard). It is the most powerful mobile phonetic engine on the planet.
- Ensure Gboard is your default keyboard. (Most Androids ship with it, though Samsung has its own keyboard which is inferior for Indian languages).
- Open any app to make the keyboard pop up. Tap the Settings Gear icon on the keyboard toolbar.
- Tap Languages > Add Keyboard.
- Search for and select Tamil (India).
- Swipe across the top variants until you see the layout titled "abc -> தமிழ்". Make sure it is checked.
- Tap Done. Use the spacebar or globe icon to switch languages.
