How to Write Formal Hindi: The Hierarchy of Vocabulary

The Hindi you speak on the streets of Mumbai is radically different from the Hindi required to draft a Ministry of Finance memorandum. Here is how to cross that gulf.

No Indian language possesses a wider gap between its spoken form and its written academic form than Hindi.

Spoken Hindi (Hindustani) is a beautiful, chaotic mix of Sanskrit bases, heavy Urdu vocabulary (inherited from the Mughal era), and ubiquitous English loanwords. However, when writing a formal cover letter, an official complaint, or web copy for a Tier-1 brand, this mixed vocabulary is considered highly unprofessional.

To achieve true formality, you must ascend to Shuddh Hindi (Pure Hindi), drawing heavily upon its Sanskritic roots.

The Vocabulary Shift (Sanskritization)

The vast majority of formalizing Hindi simply involves conducting a "Find and Replace" on your vocabulary. You must hunt down Urdu and English loanwords and swap them for their Tatsama (pure Sanskrit) equivalents.

Casual / Urdu / EnglishFormal (Shuddh Hindi)Meaning
ज़रूरी (Zaroori)आवश्यक (Aavashyak)Important / Necessary
इंतज़ार (Intezaar)प्रतीक्षा (Prateeksha)Wait
इस्तेमाल (Istemaal)उपयोग (Upyog)Use
किताब (Kitaab)पुस्तक (Pustak)Book

Structural Formality (Tone and Pacing)

Beyond vocabulary, formal Hindi writing is characterized by its passive voice and emotional detachment.

In English emails, we often write: "We will review your application soon."

A direct active translation in Hindi feels too aggressive for corporate norms. Instead, formal Hindi relies on the passive construction:

  • Active (Casual): हम आपकी फाइल देखेंगे। (We will see your file).
  • Passive (Formal): आपके आवेदन की समीक्षा की जाएगी। (Your application will be reviewed).

Notice the use of "समीक्षा" (Samiksha - Review) over the casual "देखना" (Dekhna - See), combined with the passive structural phrasing "की जाएगी" (ki jayegi).

Automate Formalization

You do not need to memorize the Sanskrit dictionary. Write your email in standard Hinglish, and use the Sariya Formalizer to automatically scrub Urdu loanwords and apply passive corporate phrasing.
